About Main Line
If you’ve ever watched the 1940 movie “The Philadelphia Story” you’d have a good idea of what life in Main Line was like back then. But much has changed since. Some parts of the Main Line still remain bastions of “old money” with gorgeous, impressive historic stone estates. However, many Main Line areas have diversified tremendously with young professionals, millennials, and young families flocking to towns like Bryn Mawr for its entertainment districts, nightlife, and art scenes.
Where is Philadelphia’s Main Line?
When we talk about Main Line neighborhoods, we are usually referring to the western suburbs of Philadelphia along Lancaster Avenue (US Route 30) and the former main line of the Pennsylvania Railroad, extending from the city limits to Bryn Mawr and ultimately Paoli.

One of the highlights of the Main Line is that it’s easy to get around. The Main Line is served by three SEPTA commuter rail lines that connect to Center City. From Ardmore and Paoli, you can easily reach New York City on the Amtrak Pennsylvanian line. Those traveling by car can use US Route 30 which runs through most towns and communities on the Main Line.
