If you love historic architecture
Washington Square was one of Philadelphia's five original squares as laid out in 1682 by William Penn's surveyor, Thomas Holme. The square, called Southeast Square at the time was used primarily as a burial ground for the first 120 years. In 1815, Francois André Michaux, a French botanist, and George Bridport, an English-born painter, converted Washington Square into a public park and planted almost sixty different tree species to create a small arboretum. In 1825, the square was renamed Washington Square, in honor of George Washington. In 1952, George Edwin Brumbaugh redid the square, adding red brick walls and lampposts, charming features that remain to this day. Other beautiful historic buildings in the neighborhood include Pennsylvania Hospital, the country's oldest hospital, and Walnut Street Theatre, the oldest theater in the country. The rich history of Washington Square West resulted in Washington Square West Historic District being added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
