If you love authentic Philly cheesesteak
South Philadelphians are known for their strong opinions and loyalty and food is no different. For years, the Pat’s vs. Geno’s cheesesteak has been a topic of hot debate for the locals (and visitors) in Passyunk and all over South Philly. If you’re moving to the neighborhood, you better pick a side! Pat’s is often referred to as “the original”. In 1930, the owner, Pat Olivieri, ran a hotdog stand at 9th and Passyunk. One day he tested out a new recipe, combining ribeye steak with chopped grilled onion. And thus, the steak was born, with the added cheesiness which came a few years later. In 1966, Joey Vento saw how popular cheesesteak was and opened his shop across the street, naming it Geno’s, his son’s name. At Geno’s, instead of slicing the meat the traditional way, they cook their steak in thicker cubes and then chop them on the grill. And thus, the fierce rivalry was born. Come and try them both for yourself and decide which one you like the most!
