About Chinatown
It was a Cantonese immigrant settlement in the mid-19th century that spurred Philly's lively Asian district in Chinatown. Nowadays, residents and visitors can look forward to having their noodles hand-stretched by renowned chefs during Chinatown's street festivals, as well as guided tours and vibrant nightlife. Unique shops, souvenir-toting peddlers and colorful festivals add to this already eclectic neighborhood. Here, you won’t find the typical Philly row homes. Instead, Chinatown residences consist primarily of condos and studio apartments, making it an attractive spot for young professionals and university students.

If you love celebrating Asian culture
It all started in 1870, when a man named Lee Fong opened a laundromat at 913 Race Street. Soon others followed and for many years, Race Street was a cluster of laundromats and restaurants run by Chinese immigrants. Today, Chinatown has become the epicenter of Asian culture and the second largest Chinatown on the East Coast, representing Hong Kong, Cantonese, Fujianese, Northern Sichuan, and Taiwanese cultures, but also Korean, Thai, Malaysian, Burmese, and Vietnamese. As soon as you enter the beautiful and majestic China Gate, also known as the Friendship Gate, you’ll find yourself having the most immersive experience with the best Asian food, products, the annual Chinese New Year events and so much more. The gate was built in 1982, symbolizing the relationship between Chinatown and its sister city, Tianjin.
