The name Marlton first appeared in the early 19th century, when Welsh and English farmers would often find marl clay in the local soil. This eventually led to the name “Malton” and the local marl became an important source of income for local businesses and farmers, leading to the first construction boom in the 1830s and 1840s. Marl was excavated in Marlton until 1930 when the pits were closed down.
