The Franklin Fountain, 116 Market St, Philadelphia, PA 19106
Appearing on the Food Network numerous times, having made a special flavor at the request of THE POPE during his visit to the city in 2019, and being named the best milkshake in America by The Today Show: The Franklin Fountain is no stranger to the limelight. That said, this corner establishment has been a staple for both residents and visitors of Philadelphia since 2004. Featuring employees serving homemade desserts in turn of the century fashion, this family owned and operated business can credit lots of its success to the familial environment the staff creates to make each patron feel right at home. Times are tough right now for many small businesses but The Franklin Fountain has remained steadfast in serving homemade ice cream, which is made onsite, throughout the pandemic in order to offer all patrons a comfort that can transport them to a childlike state with one spoonful.
One spoonful of the sweet treats offered by The Franklin Fountain, however, is truly never enough. With over 20+ flavors to choose from, you can find something to satisfy everybody’s sweet tooth here whether that be Green Tea, Rocky Road, or one of their seasonal flavors like summertime Honeycomb (my personal favorite). If you prefer something that travels easier so you can take a stroll down to the waterfront or along Penns’ Landing, novelties like an ice cream sandwich or keystone bar are available for pickup. On the other hand, if you’d like to stand by the storefront to split a massive sundae like the infamous Mt. Vesuvius, you can do so in the sunshine while studying the storefronts’ many antiques like its very own 1908 onyx soda fountain made in Philadelphia!
In highlighting the staff’s contribution to the storefront, The Franklin Fountain featured a “Have a Heart Sundae” special through the month of April with a portion of proceeds helping their longtime co-worker, Linda, raise funds for her Mom’s cancer treatment. Their “Have a Heart Sundae” includes scoops of Strawberry & Vanilla Ice Cream, strawberry compote, whipped cream, pink sprinkles, & an Arrow Root Heart cookie. This sundae is inspired by Linda’s Mom’s favorite flavors and toppings. Though April is over, you can still donate directly if you’d like, please use the GoFundMe link here.
